Kate gave a sour look to the doc though his head was turned, and whispered, "ass" playfully under her breath as she shook her head. She knew the ocean was just a quick jog from here. "Yeah, I was just thinking you might not want to give him a secondary infection by drenching him in ocean water full of microbes and crap, his forehead alone is cut up enough to let them right in, but it's your call, you're the doctor."
Kate was still being playful, but she didn't like being talked down to. She told herself it was all in jest so she let it go quickly and let the smile return to her face. She was being pushed and pulled in too many directions. She could have just brought back the towel full of tainted water and let the marshal die a quicker death, run off and let the fever he already had take him anyway, but she couldn't she was genuinely concerned, she didn't really want him to suffer and die, even if it was better for her. She could barely swallow as she followed Jack's line of sight to the ocean, doing as he asked and keeping her mouth shut for the moment.

Jack couldn't help but watch the woman walk towards the water, admiring her figure as she dipped at the waist, soaking the cloth in the water. She had been right about possible diseases, but Jack thought that was the least of this guys worries at the moment. Besides, the odds of that from a damp cloth were slim. She came back and he took the cloth, applying it to his forehead. The man stirred and Jack thought he was going to wake up, thought he might go in to another screaming fit, but he didn't. He just shifted his body and fell back asleep.
Jack stood up and turned to face Kate. "I'll check on him again in the morning, I guess, but if rescue isn't here by mid day, when it starts getting really hot, well, it's not looking good. I'm going to head back to the beach, you coming with?"
Jack kneeled back down and continued to pack up the things he had brought with him. A small bottle of antibiotics was the only item he actually used. He was still too nervous to do anything that would require the other tools he had brought. Pliers and stitches which would be used as a last resort, and would more than likely mean the death of the stranger.

"Oh god he's going to wake up," Kate thought silently. Her heart threatened to explode from her chest then and there. She braced herself for the terrible moment, but thankfully it did not come. The marshal simply moved a bit and drifted back into oblivion. Kate was safe...for now. Even if the Marshal awoke, she felt it would sort of be okay if Jack was there, even though part of her knew if Jack heard the truth he'd never look at her the same. Kate liked the way he looked at her now. She let out a silent sigh and looked up at Jack as he packed his things.
" Yeah, I'm coming." she followed Jack back to the beach, and pretty much every where he went for the next hour or so. She was tired, hungry, thirsty and scared, but somehow, she just thought it would be alright. She'd told herself that lie many times, but for a second, by Jack's side, she believed it.

Jack had been walking around camp, taking care of a few things, making sure fires were going strong. He found Kate was close behind him or next to him wherever he went. Not that he minded. Certainly not. She was the most engaging person he had met so far on this island. Not that she was talkative. She was anything but. Jack found himself making most of the conversation, which is how it came to be now that they were sitting by one of the bonfires and he was explaining to her why he was in Sydney.
"I was here for my father. He uh, he left suddenly, we don't really know why... When he surfaced again, it was because he had died in his hotel room. They aren't sure what the cause was yet. I'm sure it was something related to alcohol. So I came out here for my mom to get him, turn around, and go home. That was all I wanted to do was go there, turn around, go home."
Jack grabbed a stick and drew in the ground. "One last gift from dad I guess. A little vacation." Jack laughed bitterly and threw the stick on the fire. "We practiced together for awhile, back in LA. But we had kind of a falling out when I realized what he was doing. Operating under the influence." Jack felt the tears well up in his eyes and was powerless to hold them back, not when he was talking about him. His father who had told him he was no good for all those years, had told him he wasn't worth it. Jack remembered the day the epiphany had hit him, when he realized it was his dad who was worthless. He pushed the thought to the back of his head, wiping his face with his sleeve.
"So uh, Kate, you've been listening to me ramble all night. What's your story? Why were you down under?"

Kate listened to Jack's stories, and her heart broke for him as he spoke of his father, she wondered if any one had a good one, it seemed no one she knew was left undamaged by the deeds of their dads. Though Jack faced the orange glow of the fire, and Kate looked out at the moonlit ocean still as glass, she could feel him sobbing slightly. She let an unsteady hand rest on his lower back in silent reassurance. She wasn't sure what else to do for him. She had to be careful, she would have gladly told him his father deserved to die, that he got what was coming to him, but Kate had been willing to be judge, jury, and executioner before, and now with her own weight tipping the uncertain scale of justice, she didn't see things the same way. She hoped everyone did not get exactly what they deserved.
Kate felt her own warm tears welling up in her eyes as she sat motionless with Jack and the fire at her back. She hid her face in her hair and quickly wiped the tears away as soon as they fell. She couldn't let her emotions run their course, if she did, she'd start thinking about Wayne and the way he looked at her every night, what he wanted from her and what he took from her mother. It was too late to stop the thoughts she was trying to avoid. As her sadness and anger seethed at the thought of his name alone, she pinched her own leg to keep from unleashing a flood of tears from which there was no escape.
"So uh, Kate, you've been listening to me ramble all night. What's your story? Why were you down under?" Jack asked her over his shoulder, his lips near her neck. He managed to ask her the one thing she hoped no one would, but that everyone was asking everyone else. She'd heard it numerous times as she followed Jack around, and now it had found her. She bristled like a scared dog and removed her hand from his back and placed it in her own lap. If she was going to be honest, she was going to have to be vague.
" Well, I was sort of just trying to find a new life in Australia. I didn't exactly accomplish that, there are just some demons you can't outrun I suppose, so I was on the plane...on my way home..." She wiped her forehead with the back of her hand. Her stomach was churning, she tried to be satisfied with telling herself that while it wasn't the whole truth, it wasn't quite a lie either. She changed the subject but tried not to look desperate to do so. " So you think we'll be out of here by morning Jack?"

Jack listened to Kate tell her vague tale. She was holding back. It bothered him a bit since he had just spilled his guts to her, but he realized she hadn't asked him to do so, he was just in need of an open ear and he had found an attractive one in Kate. He nodded curtly as she finished her story, content to let her leave her story how she liked. She asked him if rescue would be there by the morning, and he wondered aloud if it would be.
"Well, if they were having an easy time finding us, it seems like they would have been here already. So maybe something's wrong. If that's the case... I've already talked about this with another guy, Goodwin. I think we should look for the cockpit when it's light out tomorrow. We can look for the transceiver, try to make contact."
He looked at her and saw her thoughtful eyes. "You can come with if you like. I told him I'd be asking you actually. It's up to you though. I think that's our best chance of rescue now. Otherwise well... who knows?"

Kate gave Jack a crooked and contented smile. Instantly she had thought she wanted to go, she needed to, and she hadn't even had to ask. Jack wanted to bring her along and that made her happy. She probably would have followed him there even if he had asked her not to, but now she wouldn't have to. " Yeah, I'd like to come with you."She had no idea what a transceiver looked like or what it would do to aid in their rescue that it wasn't doing already, but she wanted in. She needed to help and she didn't trust a soul, she wanted to have a hand in what was going to happen in her future, though as she looked at Jack sitting on the log next to her she felt different.
Jack wasn't holding anything back, he had just let her in on probably the root of all his issues in life...his father. She wasn't telling Jack except with her eyes that they had that in common. In that moment she realized she'd never met anyone quite like Jack. She let her back lean up against his and let his breathing lull her into a light sleep sitting by the fire they hoped would be a beacon to rescue boats in the night.
She was awoken by screams she didn't know were just in her head, but none the less they were the screams of the shrapnel impaled marshal. When she opened her eyes she realized there was only silence but she had nuzzled herself into Jack's lap and was sleeping with her head on his thigh. She immediately stood up and looked for a place to run. She didn't know where she was going but she had to get away from here. " Sorry I'll be back I just need some water,' and with that she headed away from the fire.
