More announcements, woo!
a). Okay guys, the site is doing AWESOMELY! I just want to thank you all so much for making this the successful place that it is. Thanks for dedicating your time to rping here, and recruiting your friends, and everything you've done to give life to the site. It means a lot to me, and hopefully this place will be sticking around for a long time!
b). I just wanted to make a reminder about god-modding and power playing. I've been seeing a lot of it around the forums lately, so I wanted to post a clarification as to what it is and how to avoid it. Unfortunately, it is against the rules, so if it doesn't clear up I'll have to start giving individual reminders, which is no fun for anyone involved.
From urban dictionary
Power playing occurs in role playing, and it's when you control someone else's character, as well as your own, without the other person's permission
Say that I play Bob, and someone else is Susie.
Bob watched Susie as she started to walk away. he ran up to her, the girl of his dreams, and yelled, "SUSIE, DON"T LEAVE ME!" She turned around, and glared at him, with resentment in her eyes, before walking up to him, slapping him, and then walking away again.
As you can see, if this were a post, I'd be typing Bob's actions, as well as Susie's. The fact that I'm typing Susie's actions is power playing.
This is a roleplaying no-no.
So, how can the above be rewritten so that it does not involved godmodding or powerplaying?
Bob watched Susie as she started to walk away. he ran up to her, the girl of his dreams, and yelled, "SUSIE, DON"T LEAVE ME!" He stared at her, waiting for her reaction, hoping she would see the error of her decision.
Susie turned around, and glared at him, with resentment in her eyes, before walking up to him, slapping him, and then walking away again. Couldn't he understand that she didn't love him anymore?
SO, in this rewrite, neither character dictates the actions of the other, and everything is perfect.
Tips for avoiding powerplaying and godmodding:
- always assume that only the characters present in the thread, are the ones posting in it
- do not assume a character takes a specific action unless they state that they do so (same goes for speaking)
- when posting something like "sawyer punches jack", try to rephrase it to something open-ended, such as "sawyer swings his fist at Jack's jaw", so that Jack can decide if he ducks, if he's hit, how hard he's hit, etc.
c). At the end of the week I'll be posting a nomination thread for spotlight awards, which are awards such as Member of the Month, Character of the Month, Thread of the Month, etc. I'm not quite sure how many of these we'll have to start--possibly just MotM, for starters. So, anyway, keep an eye out for that later in the week.
d). Finally, if you haven't activated your account yet, I'd love for you to do so. You don't have to do both, if you have multiple characters, but please do as least one.
Thanks everyone!
