5 o'clock. Emily's shift was finally over. She changed out of her nurse's outfit that she wore while working into a pair of jeans, a shirt, a jacket and sneakers. Slinging her bag over her shoulder, she headed for the room she visited most in this whole hospital.
As usual, the television was on the same channel as usual, a movie playing. "Hey," a smile spread across Emily's face as she dropped her bag along side the wall. "Did your family already come in today?" She sat on the edge of the bed. "You know, I sort of wonder what you think about or do in there. It's probably more fun than the world out here," Emily laughed a little. "I told you about Mrs. Matthews, didn't I? The one that's been here for the past month on bed rest? She had her baby today. A beautiful baby boy...he sort of reminds me of you. Generally pretty happy little guy. Loves being around people."
She allowed her hand to rest on top of Edward's. "And this girl came in. 18, maybe 19. She had a little baby girl...named Esme. She's the sweetest little baby. I thought that the name Esme was a little different, but this girl loved it for the baby. It kind of grows on you though." Emily paused for a moment, glancing at the television and back at him. "My family's trying to get me to start dating again. Alice has set me up on a few blind dates, but I told her I wouldn't go...I don't think they get it. I'll never stop loving you, Edward. No matter how many dates they set me up on."

Jack was doing his final rounds for his shift, checking in on each of his patient's making sure everything was ok. This included making sure there had been no change in vitals among patients in the coma ward, a room Jack didn't particularly enjoy being in. It was either deathly silent, or fille with some family member wanting false hope of when their relative or significant other would be coming back to life. The truth is for most, it would never happen. It would take a miracle. Something Jack had stopped believing in the day his father had been disbarred from practicing when Jack had turned him in for operating drunk.
He entered the room and saw it was empty save one girl standing over Edward Stevens bed. He had been in some sort of violent car accident. Jack checked on all the other patients in the room first. There were six beds total, then came back to Edward's which was situated closest to the door. The girl was whispering something to him that Jack couldn't hear, and as he got to her bed, he spoke to her, perhaps a bit impatiently, though not intentionally.
"Visiting hours are just about over miss, I'm going to have to ask you to step out after I finish checking on Edward."

Emily sat up a bit straighter, looking at the doctor. Sometimes she was able to miss them. Even for a nurse, she couldn't help but break the rules a few times. "Yeah, sure," she answered quickly before looking back at Edward. Emily figured she'd just come in a bit early the next day, maybe 8 or 8:30 A.M. Then she could make up for the lack of time this night.
Emily leaned over, brushing a bit of his hair back before kissing his forehead lightly. "I love you Edward," she whispered. She moved off of the bed, heading to get her bag from by the wall.

Jack watched her kiss the young man's forehead with something like pity or sympathy working it's way through his body. He watched as the girl went to get her things and noticed the familiar looking bag. "Hey... miss, do you work here?" When he actually paid attention to the details of her face he was more sure. "Yeah, I know you. We've worked on a surgery or two together haven't we? Are you an intern, a nurse?" He looked at her with slightly more interest now that he possibly knew her.
He looked back at Edward as she spoke and was sorry for her. There was something tragic here between them, and Jack knew all about that. He and his own ex-wife could have shared this same experience, although if he hadn't fixed her, he probably would have never become as close to Sarah as he had. Maybe that would have been for the better.
"You know, people say that they can hear familiar voices while in comas, after they wake up. A lot of times they say it's what brings them back. I'm sure Edward here is lucky to have you coming in here everyday."

"Yeah, I know you. We've worked on a surgery or two together haven't we? Are you an intern, a nurse?"
Emily nodded a little. "Yeah, I'm a nurse. Neonatal wing most of the time," she responded. Being there was a very hopeful and bright place. After all, it's mainly babies, except for when their parents or family came to visit them. It kept her focused.

Emily looked back at Edward, smiling a little. "I'd like to think that," she murmured. Seven years, but she wasn't giving up yet. That was the one thing about being a dreamer, a hopeless romantic: she wasn't going to let go until there was tangible evidence. "Well, I won't keep you from your work." She turned around, heading for the door.

I'm sorry, I never caught your name. I'm Jack Shephard, chief of surgery." He hesitated a moment. "I do hope everything works out well for you. You and Edward."

Emily turned around. "Emily James," she replied. "Nice to meet you, Jack." Truth was, when she was in surgery, Emily was more focused on what she needed to do than who people were. She smiled a little when he mentioned Edward, sort of wistfully. "Thanks. Have a good evening." She teased a little, "Don't stick around too long."
