There was a reason that Claire's favourite time of day was the evening. It was a good reason, not that anyone had challenged her to deliver one. As far as anyone else was concerned Claire was a grown woman - a soon to be mother - and therefore could make her own choices, which was exactly right. She just occasionally expected someone to demand an explanation as to why she was going slinking off into the jungle sometimes. Stupid, really, she supposed.
The reason that Claire preferred the evening and the reason that she was going slinking off into the jungle was this - it was so hot. She was ashamed of herself. A proud Australian who'd spent her life in the dry heat, lounging around outside for most of it, and here she was unable to stomach a little heat. She blamed the general discomfort of pregnancy. She was uncomfortable enough, and the heat was just aggravating her discomfort, that was all.
She waved her hand airily in front of her face briefly to cool herself down, then pushed an intrusive branch out of her way to head deeper into the forest. She decided that she quite liked the forest, especially during the hottest part of the day because it was nice and cool...well, cooler. And it was pretty out here too. The beach was beautiful, and Claire loved beaches, but the way the sun hit the bright white sand was blinding and the sea looked so inviting. She knew she mustn't swim though, because knowing her luck she'd get swept away. Maybe when the baby was born she would swim.
The forest was pretty too, not as amazing as the beach, but there was a certain appeal in the dappled jaded light. She supposed that she was lucky if she looked at in some ways. This island was incredible, and not many people would ever get to see or experience these things. She was not lucky, however, because it was getting increasingly unlikely that help was not coming. At this thought, she became very disheartened and blew her hair dejectedly out of her eyes.
Treading further over the soft mossy floor, she pushed another branch out of her way. It was still quite hot out here. She felt disgustingly warm and it was horribly humid and bugs were biting her. The island was pretty, but horrible. Reaching out, she took hold of a spindly looking sapling to steady herself and wondered why she'd thought the shade might be a good idea. There were no good ideas to be had on this island.

Sawyer glanced around at the stuff he found while he rummaged through the luggage left from the plane. Medicine, a few books, clothes, and some food. Why he decided to keep the medicines he found, he didn't know. Maybe just to piss someone off if they needed some. Oh, and Sawyer couldn't forget the cigarettes he found. Cigarettes were something Sawyer smoked every once, not everyday.
Running the pictures of the people on the island, he remembered a pregnant girl. There was something about her that he couldn't put his finger on. He didn't want to be mean to her, that was for sure. Sighing Sawyer covered his eyes for a moment. She was the only one he didn't have a desire to be mean to. Why? Maybe because she reminded him about what Cass went through before she torn what heart he had into pieces. Sawyer couldn't make any sense out of it, but it didn't matter.
Thinking that a walk in the jungle might do him some good, and he could hide a few things that he had found, Sawyer passed a few people and made his way through the trees. The jungle was hot, but that wasn't surprising. It wasn't supposed to be freezing cold like the places were polar bears are. He thought that there were monkeys in the jungle, but he hadn't seen one. Maybe they were all hiding, who knew?
Sawyer wiped his brow as he continued through the jungle and found the prefect tree to hide his stuff near. He bent down and placed everything carefully, so no one would see it, unless they knew where to look. Standing up, pleased with himself for finding a hiding spot for his things, turned and started walking a little deeper. Who knew what he would find?
As he continued his journey, he noticed someone ahead of him. A woman, a blond woman. If he remembered the hair, it was the pregnant woman. What was she doing out here? He noticed that she had to steady herself, and felt himself take longer strides to catch up with her. "Easy there Mamacita," Sawyer said getting closer.

Claire turned the second she heard words that were too clear to be in her imagination, letting go of the sapling and swaying for a moment before she found her balance. She'd only spoken to a precious few people since she'd been on the island, and there was only one or two that she could remember by name. She didn't think she'd yet had an encounter with this man. She could also honestly say that she'd never been called 'Mamacita' before, and let a small quizzical smile cross her face as she looked back at him.
She wasn't sure how she was supposed to react. She'd seen and heard other people giving him a wide berth or expressing their distaste about him. She didn't like to prejudge, in fact she hated it. Claire got enough of prejudice...or maybe that was too strong a word, but people looked at her like she was a bomb waiting to go off. This thought was strong enough that it made her put her hand subconsciously across her stomach, urging silently that this bomb wouldn't go off until rescue came and she could deliver her baby in a hospital.
She'd seen the man a few feet away from her hoarding things like a pack rat, however, which brought her back to the potential reasons for disliking him. She supposed she could only hope that he intended to disperse what he'd gathered as and when it was needed. She hoped that he was trying to help by doing this, and didn't intend on keeping everything for himself or even worse - for ransom. Claire had a little trouble seeing the best in people, but she guessed she could try.
"It's Claire," She tilted her head just a little, with the same small quizzical smile. As she wasn't sure what to say, this would have to do. It was a little strange to have a nickname made for her, especially considering they'd not spoken before now. Introductions seem to be a good place to start.

The way the woman looked at him, Sawyer thought she was going to ask what he was doing out here, or start pestering him like the other people had been doing. He was only doing what he had to, in order to stay alive, and of course have a little fun. Where was the wrong in that?
Sawyer was actually grateful that she didn't start yelling or anything at him. Sure, he had done some stuff for people to dislike him, but that was his goal. He wanted people to hate him as much as he hated himself. He became a monster, and that's what he wanted people to see. He became Sawyer, the man he despised. Sawyer blamed that on the real Sawyer. If it wouldn't have been for him, he wouldn't have lost his parents, he would have grown up to make something of himself. Instead, he grew up in the streets, struggling to survive everyday. He had to find money to borrow, and he borrowed money from the wrong person.
Now, being on the island was like being in the streets. They would have to find food and make their own shelters. Sawyer was going to make people come to him and ask for things. Sure, not the best way to make friends, but he wasn't really looking for that.
"Sawyer," he replied. "Nice ter meet you Claire. Now, if you don't mind my askin' why're you out here alone?"

"I thought it might be cooler in the shade," She glanced up at the canopy of trees above her. That had been her original intention. It was hot and shade looked plausible for cool...but then she'd wandered deeper and started despairing because rescue was not coming and that thought had drifted back to her.
She wasn't sure why she wanted rescue so badly. What did she have to go back to? Thomas had left her, after encouraging her to keep the baby in the first place. The hypocrite had upped and left and accused her of getting pregnant on purpose. It still brought a mix of hurt and frustration just to think about him. Her mother ...she did miss her mother, but they didn't exactly have fulfilling conversation nowadays. Whenever she went to visit her, all she got was a brief tearful exchange with her aunt Lindsay, who apparently never left the hospital room. In the outside world, she was on the verge of giving away the one person she had left for adoption. When she looked at it that way, she wasn't sure what she was thinking. It'd only taken a horrific plane crash and abandonment on a deserted island to make her realise that...
"Unfortunately..." She rolled a small shrug of her narrow sloping shoulders as if to say the remark spoke for itself because there unfortunately was no significant drop of temperature between the sun and the shade.
She didn't quite want to ask him in return. She supposed he had a right to ask, whereas she didn't. From what she'd noticed, most people here could clearly take care of themselves in a way she most likely couldn't manage. She'd started looking at herself from other people's eyes now - the ever ticking countdown to a situation that no one wanted to be involved in. She was just very glad there was a doctor on the island.
