The Basics
Name: Hugo "Hurley" Reyes
Age: 26
Place of Residence:Santa Monica, California
Appearance
Eyes: chocolate brown
Hair: curly brown
Body Type: heavyset
Overall:
Hugo has been overweight for quite a long time. When he was a child, he was of a fairly normal weight for his age. His mother restricted the amount of sweets and sugars he was allowed to consume. Following the departure of his father, however, Hurley began to eat mor unhealthy food than he used to, sneaking it when his mother wasn't looking or else when he was out of the house. The reasoning behind it was mostly a subconscious manifestation of his feeligns concerning his father's departure. The last thing his dad gave him before leaving was a candy bar, and that had quite a lasting effect on Hugo in some level of his mind. Now, he's quite a bit overweight. He doesn't like the way he looks, but at the same time, he does little to change it. Sure, his mother tries to get him to cut back a little, but it never has any lasting effect on his weight.
Hurley has chocolate brown eyes that, if anything, have a slightly hazel tint to them at times. However, they're fairly plain and average. To match, the young man has a head of signature curly, brown lockes. His hair has always been kept quite long, even in his childhood. The small ringlets hang down to his shoulders, occasionally swinging down over his face in a rather annoying fashion. However, he's too used to the length to really notice or care so much anymore. Hugo detests change, so the likelihood of him cutting his hair or making any other drastic changes to his appearance are unlikely. Hurley's skin is naturally dark, thanks to his hispanic heritage. Tanning is irrelevant to him; his skin appears darker anyways, and if anything the color remains the same, just a few shades darker.
Personality

- feeling guilty for things that aren't his fault
Overall Personality:
Hurley is quite a humerous fellow. No matter the gravity of the situation, his humor rings through, at the very least in some form of sarcasm. He's often the first person to make a sarcastic comment or a joke about any situation. When it comes down to it, Hugo enjoys having fun. He understands better than most people the need to relax once in a while, no matter how stressful a situation seems.
Hurley can't exactly be called the bravest of souls. When given the opportunity, he'll choose to stay out of harm in favor of the more safe tasks. He's not much an adventurer, really; having lived all of his life in Santa Monica, he's never experienced the outdoors to this degree before, and he feels extremely out of place. In fact, one might mistakingly percieve Hugo as a rather high-maintenance person. This belief would probably stem from the fact that Hurley is a multi-millionaire, having won the lottery at home. He tried to make the best of the situation at first by buying his mother a new house, complete with staff. He is, therefore, used to living a much easier life than he is finding for himself on the island. However, he didn't necessarily love that life either. He can get by with the island life--it just might take some time for him to adjust.
Though Hurley isn't all that courageous, he's certainly loyal. Once he makes friends with someone, he doesn't easily revoke that friendship. He'll do whatever he can to stick up for them and stand by them. However, Hurley's loyalty also lends itself to a bit of weakness because he'd do anything to assist his friends. Therefore, he can often be convinced by them to go into situations he's not particularly comfortable with. But he doesn't want to let his friends down, so he'd generally go through with what they asked him to. Hurley will do anything not to be viewed as "the bad guy." He's fairly friendly and certainly good natured, wanting to be liked by those around him.
Background[/u]
Family Members:
Tito - grandfather
Diego - brother
Carmen - mother
David - father
Reason for Being in Sydney: Visitng Sam Toomey's wife to find out more about the numbers
Reason for Flying to LA: Going home for his mother's birthday.
Character History:
Hugo's family was originally fairly lower class. They didn't have much money to afford anything extra in their house, as evident that Hugo's father didn't even have a proper functioning car. Nonetheless, he was a fairly happy child, at least for the first several years of his life. He had a very strong relationship with his father, and the two would frequently go fishing at the Santa Monica Pier. They also worked on their Camaro together, and Hugo enjoyed spending his time with his father as a learning auto mechanic. However, tragedy struck for Hugo when his father left. After driving away on his motorcycle, David would not return to the Reyes family for nearly seventeen years.
David's leaving had a profound effect on Hurley. His father's last parting gift had been a bar of chocolate, and after the departure of his father, Hugo found himself sneaking more and more sweets past his mother. He began to gain a large amount of weight, to her complete dismay and puzzlement, and he would never recover his former size from that moment on. Hugo's relationship with his mother continued to be a bit rocky--sure, they were family and they loved each other, but they tended to argue quite a bit with one another. Hurley continued to live with his mother into his twenties. He never left to go to college or see the world. Instead, he spend half of his days in his mother's living room watching T.V. and eating, and the other half of his time at his job at Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack. It was no wonder, with the diet he had now acquired, that he was so much heavier than he had ever been. Through all of this time, his father still had not returned.
Then, a terrible accident occured. A deck that Hurley was on collapsed. It had been meant to hold 8, and was holding 23, but Hurley still blamed himself for the incident, thinking that it was his own weight that had caused the collapse. He sunk into depression from the feelings of guilt he was having, and his mother checked him into the Santa Rosa mental hospital for quite some time. There, he had an imaginary friend named Dave who he was convinced was real. Dave played a large role in preventing Hurley from losing any weight or taking his medication. Hurley also met Leonard there, a man who had been stationed at a listening post in the South Pacific and was constantly repeating numbers he'd heard there.
After Hurley got out of the mental institution, he resumed work and the life he'd had previous to his stay in the institution. However, Hurley's luck seemed to change when he played the lottery and won $156 million in a sixteen week jackpot by playing Leonard's numbers. However, from the instant Hurley claimed his prize, things began to go downhill for him. A number of unfortunate incidents occured, that Hurley attributed to bad luck. As his luck grew worse, his bank account grew larger. At this point, David returned after he heard about the money, and Hurley was extremely resentful toward him. He decided to go to Australia to find out more about the numbers.
